Alcohol Policy Information System (APIS)
Overview
Policy research has made important contributions to improving public health. NIAAA leads the nation’s efforts to reduce alcohol-related problems and their myriad effects on the health and well-being of individuals across the lifespan and on public health. NIAAA’s strategic goals include enhancing the public health impact of research on alcohol misuse, alcohol use disorder, and alcohol-related problems. Synergy combines extensive expertise in legal epidemiology, social science, and information technology, with a deep understanding of alcohol policy that will bring innovations to continue the important work of APIS.
Impact
NIAAA’s APIS provides a wide range of stakeholders—including researchers, economists, policy analysts, psychologists, and public health professionals—with accurate, detailed, and consistently curated state- and federal-level data (both cross-sectional and longitudinal) on cannabis and alcohol policies. Research shows that policies have significant effects on public health by influencing alcohol use patterns (e.g., by limiting access), associated harms (e.g., by enacting laws against driving under the influence), access to prevention and treatment services (e.g., through healthcare financing), and other factors. Through the APIS website, Team Synergy is making this important policy information easily available to a wide variety of audiences, providing thoroughly researched policy information for rigorous scientific research.
